ALTITUDE
August 15 to September 16, 2008
Altitude, the theme of an upcoming exhibition of wood fired clay sculptures by Raymond Warren at Galerie McKenzie Marcotte, is portrayed both actively and indirectly by the sculpted characters. Some figures reach greater heights by perching on another's shoulders, walking on stilts or soaring on a swing. Others are elevated by gazing thoughtfully at the skies. Ceramics produced in a wood kiln are exciting and unpredictable. Because of the variations in kiln temperatures and the effects of smoke and ash on the surface, the results are never certain; this volatility makes the process a magical one.
Raymond Warren, a fine arts graduate of the University of Quebec in Montreal, has been awarded many distinctions, his work having been displayed in more that thirty collective or solo exhibitions. His sculptures can be found in many private and public collections including the Museum of Civilisation in Quebec City and the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull.
