Artist Statement
"Through the mediums of painting and drawing I explore ideas, emotions and psychological states that I find powerful and compelling. My focus is to examine aspects of the human condition, in particular how we grapple with difficult concepts, emotions or events. I have always been interested in human drama, the forces that bind and shape us, and how the personal or individual experience can become universal. My work whether it depicts figures in featureless space or interacting with various elements (i.e. fabric, machinery) is a mapping of an inner landscape in which experience, observation, and conjecture coincide.
I have considered such notions as concealment, exposure and transition, struggle, obstruction and encumbrances, vulnerability, fragility, strength, empowerment and personal safety. I express these ideas through visual metaphor, symbolic association and simple narrative. I often use dramatic lighting, a monochromatic or limited palette, and shallow depth. Velvety blacks invoke an atmosphere of tension and drama. A strong sense of movement is created through repetitive gesture."
