GENERATIONS : paintings by CHRISTINE , LESYA and MARY GRANGER

There is an inherent challenge in mounting a group exhibition of three artists in a small gallery space. What are the shared elements? How do the works relate to each other stylistically and thematically? In Generations, an exhibition of paintings by Christine, Lesya and Mary Granger, the task is made easier by the common threads that permeate families in general and these three artists in particular. Christine Granger, the mother of Lesya and Mary, is an artist who has painted images of Mother and Child in the icon tradition for many years. Recently, her paintings often include an array of colourful creatures, creating a feeling of liveliness and light heartedness. Christine writes:

"When you live on a farm up close to nature, you experience the seasons, the colours, the migration of birds. You recognize the paths of forest creatures and glimpse their fleeting forms. The care of farm fowl and animals becomes part of your everyday routine. You witness births and deaths. You discover that each creature is an individual character, each beautifully designed and formed. These animals bring delight and teach you innocence."

Both Mary and Lesya have been influenced by their mother's artistic practice and her beliefs. Lesya describes her own interest in history and symbolism which she relates to her mother:

"Throughout history there have been many images and symbols that seem to have universal appeal. I grew up with one such universal image- that of the mother and child. This image was brought into my environment through the sacred art my mother has painted for years, and in the religious icons from the Eastern Christian spiritual culture of some of my ancestors, the Ukrainians."

Using two main elements, architecture and the human figure, Lesya uses colour, composition and figures to symbolize her own spiritual journey.

Mary Granger also reaches back into family history and the creative atmosphere around her for inspiration. She describes this influence:

"Recently I discovered some childhood drawings: simple, colourful crayoned creatures, beings and patterns that now resonate deeply within my imagination and style of painting. Inspired, invigorated and awed by the mystery of how creation occurs, I am now exploring different patterns, textures and colours."

Like Christine, Mary uses animal imagery and vibrant colours.

Galerie McKenzie Marcotte is pleased to be showing the work of two consecutive generations of Granger artists who are linked by the common experiences in the life events of a family as well as a passion and talent for expressing their own journeys using personal imagery and colour.
