Biography of Christine Granger

CHRISTINE GRANGER

After studying at the Ontario College of Art and at the University of Ottawa (B.A., M.A.), Christine Granger worked as an art consultant and taught art and English. For many years, Christine has been painting icons and studying this ancient art. She does not copy ancient icons, but rather creates original works in the spirit of the icon tradition. Christine's icons can be found in many private and public collections including the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull.

In November of 2006, Novalis Press is publishing “Mother and Child”, which includes color reproductions of her icons. The book incorporates Christine’s contemporary icons with poetry about mothers and children in general to icons and prayers about Mary and Jesus in particular.

Christine writes:

"I've been painting Marian icons for many years. The image of Mary holding Christ is, for me, both exciting and extraordinary. It speaks of the incarnation, of the coming of our God. Although the faces I paint are human, I hope that my paintings point to another dimension, another reality in which we are called to participate.

I feel that Mary's role in the redemptive plan remains constant and important. She gathers us to herself only to bring us to her Son. Through our devotion to her we come to Christ whose love is, indeed, greater than life."
